GOOD AS GOLD

For the first time since 1998, the U.S. women’s hockey team is bringing home Olympic gold after defeating Canada, 3-2, in a shootout victory Thursday afternoon.

Tied at two after regulation, a sudden-death overtime and a five-person shootout, North Dakota’s Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson put the U.S. ahead in a sudden-death shootout with her now-infamous  “Oops, I did it again” deke. Goalie Maddie Rooney, a Minnesota Duluth student-athlete, sealed the Team USA victory after stopping Canadian Meghan Agosta.

Wisconsin’s Hilary Knight opened the scoring late in the first period off a power-play tally from UMD’s Sidney Morin and Badger teammate Brianna Decker. Canada responded by taking a 2-1 lead after scoring two unanswered goals in the second period.

Down by one heading into the third, North Dakota’s Monique Lamoureux-Morando took a breakaway pass from Gopher Kelly Pannek to even the score at two. After a fast-paced but scoreless overtime period, the two squads went to the shootout where the U.S. clinched the gold.
