TEAM USA BATTLES ON THE ICE
The 2018 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey team opened its Olympic program with a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime loss to Slovenia at the Kwandong Hockey Centre on February 14. Yale’s Brian O’Neill and Boston University’s Jordan Greenway tallied Team USA’s two goals, while Mercyhurst’s Ryan Zapolski stopped 22 of 25 shots in net.
O’Neill opened the game’s scoring toward the end of the first period, burying a pass from Garrett Roe (St. Cloud State) and Ryan Donato (Harvard). Greenway extended Team USA’s lead by two in the second period with 7:03 left on the clock. The goal was assisted by O’Neill and Bobby Sanguinetti.
On the game, O’Neill led the red, white and blue on the offensive end, posting a two-point game with one goal and one assist.
Slovenia recorded two goals in the third to force the game into overtime, and ultimately scored the game-winner less than one minute into the extra session.
After picking up a point in today’s game, Team USA continues group play on February 16 against Slovakia at the Gangneung Hockey Centre.

Speedskating
Florida Atlantic’s Brittany Bowe picked up a fourth-place finish in the 1000m – her best Olympic finish to-date – after clocking in at 1:14.36 Wednesday night at the Gangneung Oval. Today’s results mark Bowe’s second top-five finish in 2018 Olympic competition; she placed fifth in the 1500m Monday night.
The former basketball student-athlete crossed the finish line less than one second off the gold medal-winning pace of 1:13.56. This marks an impressive improvement from her performance in the same race in Sochi, she shaved nearly a second off her time and climbed three spots in the final rankings.
In 2018 Olympic individual competition, Bowe has one more shot at a medal. Catch her and the U.S. speedskaters in the 500m on Sunday at the Gangneung Oval.
