TEAM USA SHINES ON DAY 11

California Davis’ Brita Sigourney earned a bronze medal in the ski halfpipe Wednesday morning at the Phoenix Park Half Pipe. The former club water polo athlete posted a 91.60 in her third run of the finals to earn a spot on the podium.

Canada’s Cassie Sharpe took home gold with a score of 95.80, less than 4.20 points ahead of Sigourney.

Men’s Ice Hockey

The 2018 U.S. Men’s Ice Hockey Team advanced to the quarterfinals following a 5-1 victory over Slovakia at the Gangneung Hockey Centre. Harvard standout Ryan Donato led Team USA in the offensive zone with two goals, while Denver’s Troy Terry chipped in three assists. Meanwhile, Mercyhurst’s Ryan Zapolski stood strong in goal, registering 23 saves on the night.

After a scoreless first period, Donato opened the scoring for Team USA off a feed from Matt Gilroy (Boston University) and Terry. Less than a minute later, James Wisniewski scored a power-play goal to make it 2-0. Yale’s Mark Arcobello registered his first goal of the tournament late in the second period to make it 3-0.

Terry, an integral part of the U.S.’ scoring, registered an assist in all three second-period goals. 

Prior to the end of the second, Peter Ceresnak broke the shutout for Slovakia’s lone goal of the game.

In the final period, the U.S. added two goals to solidify its victory. St. Cloud’s Garrett Roe tallied an even-strength goal, while Donato put away his second on a power-play feed.

Ultimately, the red, white and blue outshot Slovakia, 33-23, en route to their victory.

Team USA will face the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals Wednesday at 12:10pm KST.

Bobsled

After the first two heats of women’s bobsled, the pair of U.S. sleds sits in second and fourth. Elana Meyers Taylor (George Washington) and Lauren Gibbs (Brown) are second with a cumulative time of 1:41.33, only 0.07 off the first-place pace. The duo set a start record in their second heat and are primed to take home a medal for the U.S.

Team USA’s second sled of Jamie Greubel Poser (Cornell) and Aja Evans (Illinois) are 0.02 outside medal position in fourth, with a cumulative run time of 1:41.58.

The two sleds look to solidify their spots on the podium during the final two heats Wednesday evening (KST).

Biathlon

In one of the final biathlon events of the Games, the U.S. team of Lowell Bailey (Vermont), Tim Burke, Susan Dunklee (Dartmouth) and Joanne Reid (Colorado) finished 15th in the mixed relay. The quad crossed the finish in 1:12:05.4, 3:31.1 off France’s gold medal-pace.

The final two biathlon events will take place Thursday and Friday, with the women’s 4x6k relay kicking off first, followed by the men’s 4x7.5k relay.
