Sarah Robles goes 6 for 6 sweeping Gold to close 2017 IWF WWC
Dec. 05, 2017
Sarah Robles (+90kg) became Team USA’s first female world champion since 1994 on the last day of the International Weightlifting Federation’s 2017 World Weightlifting Championship.
Robles, 29, was flawless in her perfect 6-for-6 session, sweeping the podium with gold medals in the snatch, clean & jerk and total.
She secured the gold in Snatch with the same three lifts that won her bronze in Rio: A 118kg first attempt, followed by 122kg and hitting 126kg to finish. On her opening Clean and Jerk attempt, Sarah hit 150kg followed by 154kg and 158kg lifts to win all three gold medals.
"I just went out there and made my lifts," Robles told USA Weightlifting.org. "I felt really strong and I was so happy to do this in front of my mom, my teammates and my country."
The last woman to win a gold medal at a World Championship was Robin Byrd Goad in 1994. She competed in the 50kg category in Istanbul.
Robles' gold medal-winning performance capped of a successful run for Robles on the international stage. It started last August when she won Team USA's first Olympic medal in 16 years-- a bronze. The woman who won that medal, Cheryl Haworth, who won bronze in the +75kg weight category at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, presented Robles with a gold medal Tuesday in Anaheim.
"The heaver the weights got, the easier the lifts looked," Sarah's personal coach, Tim Swords said about Robles' performance. "She's fast enough, she's mobile enough and she's strong enough. Those things added up to a world championship tonight."
After winning the 2017 USA Weightlifting National Championships, Robles went on to win the 2017 Pan American Championships in Miami, Florida. There she also went 6-for-6 and sweeping gold.
The men’s +105kg category rounded out the world championships Tuesday evening. Georgia’s Lasha Talakhadze set the new world record Snatch at 220kg. His Clean and Jerk of 257kg pushed his total to 477kg, also a new world record. Talakhadze swept gold in the +105kg category.
Team USA finished the 2017 Weightlifting World Championships with 8 medals total. In addition to Robles’ 3 medals, Maddie Rogers swept bronze in her 69kg weight category, while Harrison Maurus won bronze in the Clean and Jerk and total in his 77kg session.
Caitlin Hogan as the first member of Team USA to break a record. Her 111kg Clean and Jerk is a new Senior American record.
Team USA’s Harrison Maurus broke the Youth World Record with his 193kg Clean and Jerk. It’s also the new American Youth, Junior and Senior records. Maurus’ total of 348kg set the Youth, Junior and Senior American records in total.
Wes Kitts broke his own Senior American record with a Snatch of 146kg. Nathan Damron and Marissa Klingseis both hit competition personal records.
