USA Indoor Hockey Names Squads for Indoor Pan American Cup in Uruguay

Men’s Coach Andrew Thornton and Women’s Coach Denise Zelenak have announced the teams they will take to Montevideo, Uruguay to compete in the 2014 Pan American Indoor Cup. The event is an opportunity for the teams to improve their FIH World Indoor rankings and also qualify for the next Indoor World Cup, planned for Leipzig Germany in February 2015.

The trip started off in the usual manner which is more or less a mild rush. I arrived at the San Diego International Airport about an hour or so before take-off and checked in with my fellow teammates Kevin Barber and Jason Wellings. The trip was going to be prolonged due to several layovers before finally arriving in Montevideo.

I have always wanted to play the piano. For the longest time, I never knew why I had such a deep appreciation for it; all I knew was that I wanted to learn. A close family friend and my mentor, Joe Neuber, asked me why I don’t just learn to play the piano. I told him I didn’t have time.

Today, the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Indoor Teams will flick, tackle, dive and block with ferocity during the opening day at the 2014 Indoor Pan American Cup in Montevideo, Uruguay.  Not only will the winning tournament squads receive globally sought-after recognition, but the herald winners of the Pan Am Cup will also qualify for the Indoor World Cup scheduled for February 2015 in Leipzig, Germany.

U.S. Men's Indoor National Team athlete, Sebastian Scheurer reporting from the 2014 Pan Am Cup in Montevideo, Uruguay. 

After all of the preparation, traveling and adjusting to local conditions, here it finally was: Pan Am Game day number one!

Our opening game against the host nation Uruguay was scheduled late on Monday evening. We spent the first part of the day off with a nice late breakfast and a team jog and stretch in the morning, a video session in the afternoon and quite a bit of ‘rest and recovery.’

USA Men's and Women's Indoor Squads Secure Victories over Host Nation at Pan Am Cup

The U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams created a positive presence during the opening of the 2014 Pan American Cup yesterday in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The U.S. Men’s Team came out strong with a quick goal in the first minute of play when Mohan Gandhi (Ventura, CA) received a ball in the corner and slipped it under the goalkeeper’s near side to take an early lead. Team USA dominated possession but Uruguay held on to keep the score 1-0 going into the second half.

U.S. Men's Indoor National Team goalkeeper, Jason Wellings reporting from the 2014 Pan Am Cup in Montevideo, Uruguay.

After a late night return following the Uruguay win, the team was treated to sleeping-in. With spirits high we enjoyed a jovial stretch and replenishing breakfast. Before long our minds were turned to the Guyana game. We knew we had put in a professional performance against Uruguay, but there were tough games ahead. Guyana had surprised everyone by beating Argentina before our game. They are a strong, fast and athletic team so we needed to be disciplined. All the games are in the evenings so we fill the days with stretching, treatment, eating and meetings to keep our minds and bodies ready.

The USA Men's and Women's National Indoor Teams presented strong play yesterday in their second match of 2014 Pan American Cup in Uruguay. The squads will continue to keep that tempo heading into their final round of tournament pool play today.

Yesterday, the U.S. Men’s Squad continued their momentum from Monday’s victory over Uruguay by taking on Guyana in another fast-paced match.

A food coma is always a good ending to an awesome day and an even better start to an awesome blog, but we’ll get to that later. Today started as usual with a nice rejuvenating breakfast at the hotel and a light stretch afterwards. Meetings were organized, more meals were eaten, and treatments were given all in preparation for the big game against the Argies.

The Indoor Pan Am Cup intensifies as U.S. Men’s and Women’s Squads draw closer to finals

Every team has the same goal at the Pan American Cup: to win. In the post-match interviews, every time an athlete is asked what their objective is, the answer is the same, “To win the tournament and qualify for the 2015 World Cup.”  With the cancellation of the 2012 Championships, there hadn’t been an Indoor Pan Am event since 2010 so in some cases these athletes have been preparing for and waiting for this moment for years.

US Indoor Teams head to final day of competition of Pan Am Cup

The U.S. Men’s and Women’s Indoor Squads took on Canada in yesterday’s matches at the 2014 Indoor Pan Am Cup.

After going 3-0 in pool play, the Men were already qualified for tomorrow evening’s final. Canada came out hard and fast, playing to clinch their spot in the final match. Team USA created several scoring opportunities, but was unable to execute the finish.

A fairly stock standard day. A smorgasbord of stretches, video analysis, food, briefings and banter dominate the day. And yes the banter is exceptional...and yes the food is not. All this 'stuff' before the bus departs is what I call team admin, it's what your body needs to get done in order to compete. It's the Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde, the Jimmy MacElroy to Chaz Michael Michaels, the method to the madness. But all that stops when we set foot on the game bus.

It‘s Saturday the 12th of April and Final Day has arrived. I got woken up like any other day from the annoying iPhone alarm of my roommate Tim. Since he is all grown up and part of the working community, he is much more the morning person than me. We opened up the curtains and look at each other with a smile. You could feel it right away. The day we were working for has finally arrived.
