OKLAHOMA CITY — After helping Washington to a sweep of the No. 4 ranked Arizona Wildcats, Washington’s Taran Alvelo (Carroll, Ohio) has earned the title of Week 13 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week. Announced today by USA Softball, Alvelo stifled Arizona’s top-10 nationally ranked offense in three appearances over the Pac-12 Conference road-series.

Alvelo’s first appearance in the circle came in relief in the series opener. Entering in the bottom of the seventh inning with a pair of runners on base with two outs, Alvelo struck out her sole batter faced to lockup the 2-1 win and earn the save. Getting the start in game two of the series, Alvelo recorded 11 strikeouts, her 12th double-digit strikeout performance of the season, as the Huskies earned the series win, 3-1. Looking to secure the series sweep, Alvelo picked up her second win of the weekend after entering the game in the third inning and issuing six strikeouts through the remainder of the game.

"Taran was dominant this weekend against a powerful lineup, giving our team the chance to win all three games,” said Washington Head Coach, Heather Tarr. “She was confident, she prepared, and she worked hard leading up to the weekend. We are excited to see how good we can get as we continue to play this month."

Alvelo was near perfect on the week, going 2-0 with one save and a 0.57 ERA. Allowing just one earned run in 12 and one-third innings in the circle, Alvelo also recorded 18 strikeouts.

This is the first USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week for Alvelo and first for an athlete from Washington since the 2014 season.
