Being a Great Role Model by Coach Candrea

The one common thing about sports is the great memories they leave us during championship seasons. We are able to watch gifted athletes perform under the pressure of the big game to have those performances that we will remember for a long time. Unfortunately, sometimes these players are not the role models that we would encourage our players to follow for one reason or another. Most of the time, it deals with the lack of character and not making good decisions off the field. I thought it would be fitting to draw attention to some great examples in our game and discuss what has allowed them to become a tremendous role model while excelling on the field and becoming that person that everyone looks up to. It is these traits that sometimes are the difference between a good player and a great teammate and role model. We know as coaches and parents that the physical skills they possess are only a part of the equation to develop good players and more importantly great people.

A major part of coaching or parenting is to use athletic opportunities and experiences to teach life long lessons that prepare young people for the challenges they will face in life. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to coach many of our games finest players and people. We can talk for hours about their accomplishments on the field but ultimately it is how they represent themselves, family, and the game we all love. They all have the intangible traits that make them a tremendous teammate, leader, friend and remarkable role model for millions of young kids to follow and emulate. What are the traits that make them so special?

  • Great Work Ethic and always willing to do extra
  • Unselfish
  • Gracious
  • Approachable
  • Passion for the Game
  • High respect for the Game
  • Leads by Example
  • Gives back to the game – Great Ambassador for Softball
  • Quick to acknowledge teammates for her successes
  • Competitive
  • Humble
  • Balanced
  • Caring

Throughout my 30 years of coaching at the Division 1 level and my time with the USA National team, I have been so blessed to watch some of the finest athletes and tremendous role models make an impact in our sport that lasted much longer than their playing careers. From the 2004 and 2008 Olympic teams to the college players that I have coached or competed against, our sport produces great young ladies that continue to do things the right way and give back to the sport. I would hate to name a few because there are so many that have taken the lessons learned in their playing career to have a positive impact on so many young kids, and continue to give back to the sport.

The one thing I have found through my career is if we can make our players better people – they will become better players!

Until next time,
