Searching for role models

Sept. 01, 2012, 6:06 p.m. (ET)

As we look around the world today, it is common to become disappointed, hurt, or confused when someone you have admired as a role model or leader fails to live up to your expectations.  A constant concern we hear in the athletic arena is the lack of leadership or the absence of great role models.  Has it become a question of being cautious to be a role model in case we fail ourselves?   Is it too much to ask of someone to make good choices all the time?  To a point where peer pressure will discourage our potential leaders and they will choose to run away from the challenge of leading and becoming a positive role model.  It becomes very hard to lead when people do not want to be led!

We are living in a society that lacks trust in others.  From the constant violence we see around the world and at home to the constant disappointment felt by our leaders in sport and society.  It has become much easier for most to turn their back and not stand up for what is right.  Role models and leaders are essential in building success.  Whether it is in the athletic arena or at home, people must be willing to set the right example 24/7 each and every day by making good choices and living their lives by principles built around trust, honesty, hard work, caring for others, and having a positive effect on people.  These are the characteristics of role models and leaders that lead to not only success but happiness in life.

As coaches, parents, and teammates, we must be willing to be that role model and leader.  It comes down to making the right choices and encouraging others that the right way is the only way to have a positive effect on people.  Who knows – maybe 1 by 1, we can develop leaders and role models both on and off the field.

In simplest terms, we are talking about great people that have great character.  I know they are out there!

Until next month,
