This month, I have decided to write about a different game of Softball that I had the privilege to be a part of at the University of Arizona this past week. It began many months ago when I received a phone call asking if I would be interested in hosting some of our soldiers wounded in action from both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. As they began telling me that these young men were Amputees and are being brought together to play softball, my very quick answer was “What do you need and when?” I was then sent information on each of the participants and their age, hometown, and which war they were wounded in. It was a life changing experience to meet some of the men who have protected our freedom, lost a limb, and had a huge smile on their face excited about playing a softball game at Hillenbrand Stadium. After a few calls to my friends at Mizuno, I had practice uniforms, game uniforms, shoes, jackets and Louisville Slugger provided each young man with a bat and glove. It all came together in moments as who would not want to participate in this great event.
I would meet the guys on Wednesday morning as they arrive in Tucson and began preparation for the game to be held on Friday evening after our game with Baylor University. As I walked onto the field, my heart stopped as I looked around and saw young men who had lost a leg or arm dressed in practice uniforms eager to begin their practice. I received a warm welcome from the guys thanking me for the opportunity and all the gear. As I stood in the middle of these men taking a picture with them, all I could think was this could be the greatest experience I have had in a long time. I watched them begin practice and was so impressed with the positive attitudes, gratefulness and pure enjoyment they showed playing a simple game of softball. Well, maybe not simple as it took considerable energy and effort to do the things we take for granted.
Friday night would finally come and it was time for the real game to begin. As each player would be introduced to a standing ovation from crowd of 2,000+, these guys looked like they were having the best time of their life. The game would include numerous home runs, diving plays, slides and most of all, a common appreciation for the effort displayed by our heroes that evening. I have never in my life felt so proud to be a part of such a life changing experience for all that attended. Baylor University would be the base coaches and support for one team and the University of Arizona players would do the same for the other team. One of the most touching moments would happen as the Baylor players and Arizona players would gather around home plate to congratulate the home run hitters. I have seen many celebrations in my career but these were special moments that I will remember for a lifetime. And I must say that these young men inspired everyone in attendance.
To make a long story short, we must take care of our veterans for protecting our freedom and the sacrifices they have made to protect the greatest country in the world – The United States of America. We had an opportunity to see the sacrifices that were made first hand and will always cherish this opportunity to thank these brave young men. Our softball season is heating up but I must say, nothing will ever compare to the game we witnessed last Friday evening. Thanks guys for helping us keep a healthy perspective on the game we play!
Until next month,

Coach Candrea
