MONCHENGLADBACH, Germany – April 21, 2019 - Yesterday was the U.S. U-21 Women's National Team's first game of the 3 Nations Tournament between USA, Germany and Great Britain in Viersen and Mönchengladbach, Germany. USA's game was a learning opportunity as it presented the red, white and blue with a different style of play, enticing the team to problem solve and adapt to challenging situations. USA lost the opening match 2-6 to Germany.
Germany plays a smart, tactical, and aggressive style of play. They look to involve every player in the attack and constantly rotate in the midfield and forward line. These characteristics posed obstacles for USA that were resolved as the game evolved.
The first quarter remained scoreless and both teams had equal opportunities on attack field play and on penalty corners. USA goalkeeper Gianna Glatz (Medford, N.J.) made many crucial saves which prevented Germany from capitalizing on their circle opportunities.
In the second quarter, USA went down 0-2 but got a tally on the board when Maddie Zimmer (Hershey, Pa.) carried the ball for over 20 yards and eliminated the goalkeeper with very fast stick skills.
The third quarter proved challenging for USA as Germany scored four consecutive goals in the 21st 39th, 41st and 44th minutes.
USA picked up their performance in the final quarter. The red, white and blue remaining not scored upon and scoring their second goal, also on a fast counter attack by Zimmer.
“It’s been very exciting and humbling to be able to represent the United States internationally with such a great group of girls," said Zimmer. "We’re constantly learning and improving throughout the tour and we feel prepared for whatever comes in the rest of our games.”
Despite the outcome, U.S. U-21 Women's National Team is looking forward to making adjustments and get back on the field. USA faced Great Britain today in their second game. For more information regarding the 3 Nations Tournament, visit the official event page by clicking here.
