VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - July 24, 2016 - The time for sun, surf and field hockey came to an end this afternoon at the 2016 Summer Bash at the Beach (SBB), presented by 4U Sports. Though the hot weather was an uncontrollable factor, the 69 teams in attendance battled it out and pushed through at the 2nd annual event to make sure it was enjoyable for all who participated.
"The 2016 Summer Bash at the Beach was a success for the second year in a row," said Chelsea Mitchell, USA Field Hockey Events Marketing Manager. "All of the athletes had a blast and I'm looking forward to making the event even better in 2017!"
Competition play got underway on Friday, July 22 and consisted of 27 U-10/U-12 Co-Ed Division teams and 42 U-14 Girls Division teams. All teams competed in a 7v7 game play format on two Astroturf watered based fields at the Virginia Beach National Training Center and on a state-of-the-art turf field in the Virginia Beach Sportsplex stadium.
USA Field Hockey would also like to thank Gatorade for providing four hydration stations and 240 bags of ice to keep athletes properly hydrated. Going along with this theme of sun safe play, the traditional game format of two halves was broken down into four quarters to permit 2-minute water breaks between the first and second and third and fourth periods. Our appreciation also goes to the medical staff on site who monitored the heat index to ensure a safe environment while the athletes did what they do best - play hockey!
