COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Sixty athletes and four guides will represent Team USA in track and field at the 2019 Parapan American Games as announced today by U.S. Paralympics Track & Field. Highlighting the roster of 39 men and 25 women are 25 Paralympians who will line up at the Athletics Stadium in the Villa Deportiva Nacional Videna cluster in Lima from Aug. 24-28.
“Lima is the beginning of a very exciting year for our program," said Joaquim Cruz, head coach of the U.S. Paralympics Track & Field Parapan American Team. “The Parapan Am Games will be great preparation for our athletes of all levels to compete internationally ahead of our world championships and ultimately the Paralympic Games next summer.”
The U.S. will bring a strong contingent of Paralympians to Lima, including Paralympic champions Deja Young (Mesquite, Texas), David Brown (St. Louis, Missouri) and guide Jerome Avery (Lemoore, California), Jeremy Campbell (Perryton, Texas), Breanna Clark (Los Angeles, California), Jerome Singleton (Irmo, South Carolina) and Gianfranco Iannotta (Garfield, New Jersey). Also adding their experience to the roster are Paralympic medalists Lex Gillette (Raleigh, North Carolina) and guide Wesley Williams (Visalia, California), Sam Grewe (Middlebury, Indiana), Scot Severn (Caro, Michigan), Femita Ayanbeku (Boston, Massachusetts) and Kym Crosby Hightower (Yuba City, California).
Sixteen athletes on the 2019 roster competed at the last edition of the Parapan Am Games in 2015 where Team USA athletes won 53 medals, including podium performances from Brown, Avery, Gillette, Williams, Iannotta, Hightower and David Prince (Marietta, Georgia).
The Games will feature 1,850 athletes competing in 17 sports, making it the biggest Parapan American Games to date. For more information, visit Lima 2019’s website.
