The Youth Olympic Games kicked off Jan. 9th in Lausanne, Switzerland, and saw plenty of up and coming winter athletes represent the United States on the international stage. This year’s Games included the exciting debut of ski mountaineering as well Olympic mainstays like figure skating, luge, and alpine skiing. 

The U.S. team includes 99 athletes across 16 sport disciplines who will compete amongst 1,800 15-18-year old’s representing over 70 countries. The Swiss Alps are no stranger to international competition. The Winter Olympic Games were held in nearby St. Moritz in 1928 and again in 1948, and the city will  host four sports at this year’s Youth Olympic Games.

Special Shoutouts 

Before things kicked off in Lausanne, a few Olympic legends offered some advice, including a shout out from Usain Bolt! Plus, Olympic figure skater Karen Chen sent her brother, Jeffrey, some love from back home.

Bringing Home Bronze  

Team USA found plenty of success on the ice. John Toban skated his way to individual bronze in the men’s 1500-meter, and figure skating pair Jeffrey Chen and Katarina Wolfkostin also managed to grab figure skating bronze. In addition, Team USA athletes helped mixed-country teams to two podium finishes, taking part in a unique Youth Olympic tradition. 

Making Its Debut

Meet The Future 

U.S. Ski and Snowboard’s Emma Resnick and figure skating’s Audrey Shin gave standout performances in Lausanne. There’s no doubt the future is bright for these two Youth Olympians.
